Chicago

Back in January, Jaret and I were planning a little getaway by ourselves. We thought we'd go to Chicago, but nothing was clicking so we didn't end up going then. But over the course of trying to plan the trip, we found out that Norah Jones was going to be in Chicago in March, and since it has been a dream of mine to see her in the city of jazz/blues, Jaret commanded me to get tickets. (He has to command things like that or I never spend the money, 2nd guess forever, and just generally don't get it done.) :)

Since we left the kids in January, we decided to make a little family trip out of going to Chicago. We got in late Friday night, and found that our 'suite' meant it had a kitchen, not that there was a separate bedroom. It was a little hard to fall asleep that night, but the real concern was what Brett and Heather were going to do the next night while the kids were supposed to be sleeping and they were babysitting. Sitting quietly in a dark room didn't sound like a lot of fun. So we got another hotel room for Saturday.

Saturday morning we took the kids to the Museum of Science and Industry. This was something we thought Smith would love, but it was very busy and all the kids were tired, so it wasn't the most fun ever. :) They did enjoy a few things, like this submarine simulation:
While the older two were busy doing that, Faye found an area that showed the bunks that the soldiers slept on and climbed right in. She lay down on the pillow and kept begging for a blanket. Finally I moved her to the top bunk where the blanket was. She sucked her thumb and just laid there. I think she would have slept, if she hadn't drawn a bunch of attention. :)

In the farming section, checking out the tractor:
Rach, Jason, and some friends decided to go to Chicago the same weekend. So we met up with them Saturday evening, along with Brett and Heather, at Big Bowl. (I love that place. YUM!) Afterwards we moved hotels, and got things set up for the kids. Then off to the concert.

It was such a fun experience. The perfect, relaxing mood music, a pretty old theater, alone with my hubby. I was interested to see how Norah would dress and act on stage. He music is so relaxed that I expected that she would be too, but it struck me that she might be a perfectionist. She was cute and said a few cute little things, but wasn't real talkative. It was mainly about the music. I treasure the memories and the fact that we got to go.

The next day we took the kids to the American Girl store. We had lunch there, which was an experience that they made very special, of course. We ended up getting a birthday present for Faye while there, and Smith surprised Avi by picking out an accessory for her dolls, which he gave to her once we were on the way home.

Jaret also got to go to a candy factory that he's always wanted to visit, and so that was a fun little stop for him, although he couldn't see as much as he had hoped. So someday he'll have to go to another one so he can cross that dream off his list.
